Today is our “B Day”!

The best way to stay committed to the B Corp movement is to talk about it.

Every conversation we have about our B Corp certification has become an opportunity to educate people about one of the root causes of our planet's current predicament. Since becoming a B Corporation one year ago today, we’ve had plenty of opportunities. And most of the time, it’s the first time the folks we’re talking to have heard of the Benefit Corporation designation. It’s also the first time they’ve heard that conventional corporations, since the time of Milton Friedman in the 1970s, are legally obligated to put the interests of their shareholders first.

Folks are genuinely shocked to learn that most corporations would be opening themselves up to shareholder lawsuits if they decided to prioritize the planet, their people, and their customers ahead of their shareholders. Sadly, the shareholder movement of the 1970s began the trend that has created the very wealth inequality that fuels our current collapse into fascism, the extraction boom that sucks value out of the living systems that support the very life corporations are ultimately built on.

As a design company, we’ve observed that the lack of conscience we see in corporations is by design. Corporations since the 1800s have had the status of legal persons. However, they are also legally hampered from having the conscience of a person. The way we see it, we’ve already created the feared Artificial Intelligence that is threatening our very existence. It’s the multinational corporation.

This corporate death cult is merely a symptom of policies put into place decades ago. These policies can be reversed, and we’re proud to be one of thousands of businesses that are not waiting for the policies to change and force our compliance. We have intrinsic reasons for choosing B Corp priorities.

As a B Corp, we are not governed by synthetic consciousness, synthetic intelligence, or synthetic values. We practice a circular economy with our products because that’s the way we observe our sustainable ecosystems operating. We act on pro-social values because that is what makes all intelligent species thrive, their social relations.
