New Products + New Collaborations

As soon as we had perfected the Auto-Adjust mechanism for the Soul Seat Perch, it occurred to me that it could be hidden inside all sorts of locations where you might want a bolster that changes height on the fly. The Ottoman is the first example of this. As we were experimenting with different versions and shapes, artist Jenny McGee approached us with a proposal to trade some of her artwork for a Soul Seat that she could use in her studio. We realized that the new Ottomans we were working on would be a wonderful platform for artists while it was also enhancing the form of the person perching on it.

We finally settled on one of Jenny’s pieces to start, Convergence. We were delighted by the response we received when we displayed this new Ottoman for interior designers and design enthusiasts at the Midwest Design and Furniture Fair in Overland Park, KS. From a distance, folks thought it was a block of carved stone. Then they were pleasantly surprised by the plush velvet once they put their hands on it. A second surprise awaited them when they sat on the Perch and discovered how accommodating the design is to their desire to sit flexibly.

In order to get the curved front, our master woodworker, Nick Spaeder, had to craft a custom form over which he bent and glued up layers of specialty plywood. Looking down from overhead the Ottoman looks like a baseball diamond with the Perch at home plate. We’re so pleased with how functional this shape is. Even though it doesn’t have the concave shapes of our classic Soul Seat “butterfly” cushion, your body can still find all the variety of natural sitting forms it craves.

Four of these shapes fit nicely together, echoing a four-leaf clover, or combined with cube-shaped versions, giving a whole new meaning to sectional seating.

A note from the artist, Jenny McGee:

"It's so fitting that my piece, Convergence, was the one you chose for this project. My intention with that piece was to embody the convergence of Mind, Spirit, and Emotion. Now, to see that piece being combined with good furniture design so that the art can support the human form as well extends the idea of convergence even further. It has become the convergence of many layers of artistic effort from functional design to inspiring visual aesthetic."  In response to my question about how her Soul Seat functions in her studio, "My beautiful Soul Seat doubles as both an office chair when I'm at the computer as well as where I sit when painting vertical canvases."
